My Forever Partner

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills-- From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore." (Psalm 121:1-8 NKJ)

Today's Scripture passage is one of my favorites. It is so comforting. Unlimited help is available to me. I can access it at any time. It comes only from the hills of the Lord.

I have heard many testimonies of how God has helped in times of need. I have read many accounts of his help at times of desperation. I have experienced his help firsthand. And I am still amazed at his grace in such times of need. I am not amazed that he answers prayer or sends the help. I am amazed that he doesn't say, "enough!" I'm amazed that he is the Creator and yet he pays attention to my needs.

When I seem to stumble, I am reminded that "he will not allow my foot to be moved." Thank you Jesus! It doesn't seem fair that his peace lets me sleep, while he doesn't. And his protection surrounds both Israel and me.

Of course, I recognize the metaphors imbedded in this passage. Yet, the Psalmist's beautiful prose and poetics encourages my soul. Even the slightest harm from sun or moon, though I may not be aware of it, doesn't escape God's attention.

Evil may come, and probably will, but God "preserves" me from it. He may allow it to test my resolve and commitment and faith, but he preserves me from its bondage. God preserves my soul! Hallelujah! He goes everywhere with me and from there comes back too. Like Moses, if God isn't going I don't want to go. He is my "forevermore" partner!

What a great song to sing on the way to church! I will look to the hill of the Lord. His help comes from there. He promises to help me. He is my shield. He preserves my soul. He is with me everywhere I go and will be with me forever.

Dear Father, thank you for your sustaining, preserving help. Empower me to trust you forever. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Make it easy for God to help, commit yourself to him. Trust him today!
