"Now it came to
pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set
His face to go to Jerusalem, and sent messengers before His face. And as they
went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him." (Luke
9:51-52 NKJ)
One of
the aggravations in ministry is the interruptions by people who think their
agendas are more important -- or should be -- to the pastor than his own.
Staying focused is one of the greatest human challenges. I am convinced that
the Lord had this challenge too.
On the
mount of transfiguration, Peter tried to assert his agenda, but the Father kept
things focused on his own purpose. Some people intended to make him King over
Israel, but Jesus escaped into the mountains. Mrs. Zebedee wanted to place her
sons in positions of power and authority in the Kingdom of God, but Jesus kept
his focus on the Father's will.
Finally, the prospect of death on a cross confronted him,
but Jesus "steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem." And the
Apostle Paul claimed he was personally focusing on the future and
pressing toward his goal. So, I conclude that a steadfast focus is the real
issue for anyone who wants to achieve the Lord's will.
In this
world of overload (family, technology, and work), it can be a challenge to keep
an eye on the ball when it is bouncing all over the place. He who pursues many
agendas will fail to achieve any agenda. I can become so absorbed with earthly
goals that I fail to achieve heaven's purpose.
When it is my time "to be received up," I want my face to be
steadfastly set on achieving God's will and purpose.
Dear
Father, thank you for the mission you have given us. Empower me with faith and
focus to pursue your will for my life in your mission. I pray this in the name
of Jesus. AMEN
Are you
making a difference?
