"For all the
gods of the peoples are idols, But the LORD made the heavens. Honor and majesty
are before Him; Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary." (Psalm 96:5-6
NKJ)
When I stop to
consider current social trends, I conclude that "society" (the
imaginary they) has a category of “unfortunate” for every one who does not fit
"their" physical mold of youth, beauty, accepted weight and shape,
IQ, and so forth.
In addition,
"they" think, we must be engaged in the right romantic relationship,
a fulfilling career, the best physical activities, and “the good life” in
general. Of course, the question is this: who decides the standards for such
issues?
Why should I let
advertisers and other commercial interests measure me and my life? Why would I
surrender control of my identity to Hollywood's idea of blessing or woe? Why
must I accept the unconditional condemnation of anyone who is most often
greedily pushing a product, service, or lifestyle?
In Matthew 6:28-30,
Jesus gives his unqualified value to me as an individual. Human beings are
created in his image and likeness, so we are naturally beautiful because of his
handiwork. The most glamorous person we can imagine is not as magnificent as the
wild flowers dancing free in the fields. If we must compare ourselves on some
level, then compare by the Lord’s chart. It will be just and acceptable.
Individuality is
valuable. No other human being is worthy to be imitated. The life of the
Kingdom of God makes its citizens more beautiful than even the flowers of the
field. “God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is
thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you”?
In 1 Timothy 2:9-10
and 1 Peter 3:3-4, Both Paul and Peter instruct us to be more concerned about
the inward person than the outward person. By following their counsel, I will
have a greater impact on those around me who are not followers of Christ. The outside
is important, and we should always “put our best foot forward,” but it is the
inside that determines what is the outside's best.
I think about what
my mother said about physical looks: “Beauty is only skin deep.” I want to be
certain that whatever beauty I have is deeper than the skin.
Dear Father, thank
you for the beauty we have through Christ, our Lord. Empower us with the
strength and beauty found in your sanctuary. I pray this in the name of Jesus.
AMEN
