Shutdown

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills-- From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber." (Psalm 121:1-3 NKJ)

Concerning the government shutdown, today's headlines proclaim, "No sign of progress." Management by crisis is a terrible way to administer government by the people, of the people, and for the people. We surely need God to pour wisdom upon our leaders in Washington.

It seems obvious to us at the grassroots level that Congress and the President, as well as both political parties, could surely find some common ground for keeping our governmental services operating at an efficient level. One thing is certain, their individual and collective salaries will not be stopped, no matter how much of the rest of government shuts down.

What are we to do? It may be time for Americans to flex our muscles at the polls. Yet, an immediate and wholesale change in Washington is not possible in the short-term. So, what about now? Since our politicians are going to act like toddlers who won't negotiate and who refuse any alternative measures to their personal positions, we must bombard heaven for help.

Our help is not in the hills of political power. Our help is not in the hills of economic power. Our help is not in the hills of influence and popular opinion. Our help comes from the One who made the universe and all that is therein. Our Lord is the only one on whom we can depend.

Lying and crying won't get it done. Moaning and groaning won't do it. Fussing and cussing won't do it. Poking and joking still won't get it done. Only our God can keep our feet solid in these uncertain times. He is neither taking a nap nor in a deep sleep. He is wide awake and aware of both what is taking place and what needs to be done. He alone has the solution for our problems.

Dear Father, thank you for your control in all situations. Empower our confidence in your help and give wisdom to our governing leaders. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Look to the Lord for help today,
