Making Peace

“And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land. So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren.” (Genesis 13:7-8 NKJ)

The holiday seasons are so stressful and filled with perplexity. When we are young, we simply do whatever the rest of the family does, wherever it is to be done. When I was growing up, our immediate family celebrated most major holidays at my maternal grandparents’ home with my mother’s sisters’ families.

But when I got married, the perplexity began. Where would we go for Thanksgiving or Christmas lunch? With whom would we celebrate? It became a scheduling nightmare, because Bobbie and I didn’t always want to do what the other members of our families wanted to do. It wasn’t merely a “when” problem but also a “where” issue. And there was the travel involved too.

Sometimes Bobbie wanted to celebrate with her family on the same day and at the exact same as I wanted to celebrate with my family. And we all know, it is impossible to be in two places at the same time. In addition, when would we “celebrate” with our children and give them stability in our home?

Now remember, holidays and celebrations are as important to our in-laws as they are to us and our families. The perplexity enlarges with the addition of each “new family” to our extended family. And holiday celebrations are about family, so they should be family-oriented, full of family fun and traditions. Each holiday should be an addition to the warm memories of our lives.

Perhaps we might consider that family time and blessings can be celebrated whenever and wherever convenient to everyone involved. We make adjustments at work, at church, and for vacations. Why not adjust graciously for our families? It’s a peaceful solution.

Dear Father, thank you for your gracious solution to our need. Empower us to find peaceful solutions in our relationships. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and courageous today making peace,
