Everlasting Love

"For a mere moment I have forsaken you, But with great mercies I will gather you. With a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment; But with everlasting kindness I will have mercy on you, Says the LORD, your Redeemer." (Isaiah 54:7-8 NKJ)

My four-year-old grandson, Grant loves to play hide-and-seek. His idea, however, is that if you can't see his face or he can't see you, then you can't see him. We laugh and have a jolly old time with his "forsaken" moments at our house.

Now, for a moment, consider this childish thinking  and apply it in reverse to us and God. For "a mere moment" God hides his face from us. And we think he can't see us. We have that wrong! For his "mere moment" we can't see God BUT our face is not hidden from God. Our circumstances and need are not hidden from him.

No matter the situation: death, depression, illness, tragedy, . . . we may sometimes "feel like" God has abandoned us.  However, his "wrath" is only "for a mere moment." It may seem like a lifetime to us, but it is only a moment. No matter what our present circumstances may presently be, to God they are "like the waters of Noah" (Isaiah 54: 9a) and he has made a covenant to neither rebuke us nor be angry with us (v.9b). The everlasting lovingkindness in God's heart created mercy and redemption. It produced a miraculous immaculate conception and Christmas.

Dear Father, thank you for your everlasting love and mercy and redemption. Empower us with the confidence of your covenant. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
