Listening To God's Son

"In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe." (Hebrews 1:1-2 NIV)

Back in 1970, I spent a few days in Vietnam. While there at the pleasure of the USMC, I walked a few trails that might have been booby-trapped and some were. Since I walked "point" for most of my tour of duty there, I experienced a lot of anguish and fear about each step I took.

Teaching others to be Christ's disciples is sort of like walking along those unknown trails. You're never certain of where to step next. It's interesting that post-modern folks don't view the Bible the same way past generations of Christians have.

There seems to be too much universalism hidden behind the deception of tolerance.  Then there is the general attitude of self-love. But don't ignore the obstinacy of rebellious spirits. Then there are those who simply don't want to be taught the commands of Jesus. They think merely swimming in the ocean of God's love is enough without further need to grow or mature.

While thinking along this line, let's not forget those ultra-religious folks who demand a dream or vision or prophecy or words of knowledge and wisdom. In my years of pastoral ministry, I have learned something very precious to my soul. I must listen to the Son and remember that the Holy Spirit will not speak anything that disagrees with the Son. God has exalted his son, Jesus Christ above all others (see Ephesians 1:18-23).

Dear Father, thank you for speaking to us through your Son. Empower us with the confidence to listen only to your Son. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and courageous today listening to God's Son,
