Enjoy the Journey

"So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 8:15 NIV)

Rush, rush, rush – the sound of our lives. The whistle of our train. Our schedule brings stress and stress brings fatigue and assorted problems. The assorted problems are the results of rush, rush, rush. And that is the issue to address.

When we rush around from one project to the next, we might miss the joy of the journey. Joy is the issue addressed by the author of Ecclesiastes (the Preacher). He has discovered that enjoying the journey is the best thing a person can do in life. It is an attitude that must be developed: let’s enjoy life no matter what is going on today.

Now, the Preacher is not prescribing a lazy, apathetic attitude or lifestyle. He is not promoting a “let’s party and not worry” philosophy. Rather, his point is that despite our schedule, our projects, our stresses, and so forth we should adopt a joyful perspective that enjoys life in the midst of toil and circumstances.

My wife, Bobbie, once told someone, “Your job will continue even if you die. Your employer will pause only long enough to replace you.” That is why the Preacher says, “there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad.” Nothing we do is so critical that it can’t be done or completed without us. So, why not lower your blood pressure and enjoy life?

In this life, there is nothing better than joy. No matter what, wouldn’t you rather experience joy as you live? Wouldn’t it better to celebrate life today? Surely, joy is better than drudgery, stress, and illness. Joy and laughter promotes good health! That is why it better than anything under the sun.

Dear Father, thank you for the joy we have every day in Christ Jesus. Empower us to enjoy the journey that you have placed before us. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and courageous today enjoying the journey,
