We
have all enjoyed the energy of anticipation for future events. Expectant
parents joyfully assemble the crib, paint the nursery and practice the
breathing technique. Residents of a small town eagerly await the visit of a
celebrity or dignitary. Lawns are mowed, sidewalks swept, cracked windows
repaired at City Hall and colorful banners are stretched across major
intersections.
Every
action has meaning in anticipation of a future event. It is tragic when we lose
that excitement of hope. And it may be due to an inordinate focus on heavenly
things. When events do not occur as we have envisioned them, we begin to grieve
and lose hope. The saints at Thessalonica had this problem (1 Thessalonians
4:13-5:11).
They were not informed of the Kingdom realities involving life and death. In
the Lord’s kingdom, events do not always unfold as we think they should. Yet,
obedience to the Lord’s exhortation, related by Mark, will enable us to be
confident of his return, no matter what occurs between now and then.
Taking
heed is the intelligent observance of what is occurring around us, in us and to
us. Watching is the active practice of present faith while anticipating the
future in hope. Praying is the constant spiritual vigilance against the loss of
our hope.
The
watching and praying will inform us of the times (1 Thessalonians 5:1-3). The
hope grows stronger as we see the words of our Lord and the apostles unfold
before us. Jesus is coming soon!
Dear
Father, thank you for warning us to take heed. Empower us with hope that
endures to the end. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
