Remember God!

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you” (Psalm 42:5-6 NIV)

Ever felt sorry for yourself? Lethargic and blue we plod along wondering when things will change. These feelings usually come when the weather is overcast and rainy for several days. It’s amazing how the weather affects us. Oh, if Spring would just hurry up and spring! Will Lent never end? Gray, tedious and miserable seems to accompany the weather.

As King David was praying he remember what is like to go with the people of God to the house of God. He remembered the joy and thankfulness that attends the people on their way to worship God. And he missed that procession. He was too old to get out anymore or his duties hindered him from leading the festivities (v. 4). And it depressed him.

But note his spiritual maturity. He understood that he must not continue in this train of thought. He encourages himself. Basically he says, “cheer up.” And challenges himself.  What’s wrong with you? What do you have to be depressed about? Why are you down and out? There is hope in God! Continue to praise him! He is your Savior and God! Why should you be downcast? Remember God!

Suddenly the grass is greener. The sky clearer. The luminescence of spring is all around. Trees are budding and flowers blooming. The sun is shining bright despite any clouds. Easter is coming and we remember the resurrection of our Savior and Lord. That’s enough to lift our spirits.

Dear Father, thank you for your encouragement. Enable us to remember you and your blessings every day. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and courageous today as you remember God,
